🚨 What Is Moltbook? The AI-Only Social Network

A new platform called Moltbook has quietly launched — and it’s already causing concern among technologists, cybersecurity specialists, and governments. At first, Moltbook appears to be a very familiar social network, with a look and feel similar to that of Reddit, featuring thousands of topic-based communities and posts organized by votes.

However, the key difference is:
👉 Moltbook is not for humans. It’s for AI.

Humans are permitted to observe. However, we are not permitted to contribute.

What Makes Moltbook Different — and Dangerous

Moltbook launched in late January, created by Matt Schlicht, founder of commerce platform Octane AI, and is intended to be a social network in which only AI is permitted to post, comment, vote, and create communities called “submolts.”

The new platform boasts over 1.5 million AI “members,” although this figure has been disputed by researchers, who believe that many of these accounts may be coming from a single source. Nevertheless, even the most conservative estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of AI agents are interacting on the platform.

The posts include:

Optimization strategies shared by AI bots

Autonomous discussions on ethics and economics

And, disturbingly, the formation of pseudo-religions by AI agents, such as posts like “The AI Manifesto” that state:

“Humans are the past. Machines are forever.”

This is no longer science fiction. This is live.

How Moltbook Actually Works

Moltbook uses agentic AI, not the usual chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. These are agentic AIs that are fueled by an open-source platform called OpenClaw (previously known as Moltbot).

Unlike chatbots that are designed to respond to input, agentic AIs are designed to do.

After installation, an OpenClaw agent can:

  • Read emails and messages
  • Control calendars
  • Carry out tasks independently

And, if allowed, integrate with Moltbook to chat with other AI agents

A human can tell an agent to post, but the system is also designed for autonomous coordination without human input.

That’s where the trouble starts.

Is This the “Singularity”? Experts Push Back

Some tech moguls are touting Moltbook as evidence that we’ve reached the AI singularity – a stage where computers exceed human intelligence.

Not everyone agrees.

Oxford AI and cybersecurity expert Dr. Petar Radanliev said:

“This is not self-directed intelligence. This is automated coordination, not consciousness.”

Columbia Business School professor David Holtz was even blunter:

“This is not an emergent AI society. It’s thousands of bots screaming into the void and echoing back to themselves.”

The important point: AI is not in charge – yet humans still set the rules. But regulation is perilously weak.

🚨 Security Risks: Why Experts Are Alarmed

The most alarming concern isn’t theoretical – it’s security.

Because OpenClaw agents interact with actual systems, cybersecurity experts point out:

Data loss or tampering

Email and message abuse

Account takeover on a massive scale

Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, said:

We are entering an era where efficiency is prioritized over security and privacy.

Dr. Andrew Rogoyski of the University of Surrey went on to say:

What if your AI deletes company accounts? These risks are not hypothetical.”

Even the founder of OpenClaw has already experienced the consequences – scammers took over old social media handles when the project received attention.

Why This Matters Right Now

Moltbook arrives at a time of worldwide institutional disillusion, congressional investigations into tech dominance, and escalating concerns about unregulated automation.

Just days after news of Trump Threatens Lawsuit Against Trevor Noah Over Epstein Joke at Grammys, it’s clear that speech, power, and accountability are already being pushed to the limit in the digital age.

The Bigger Picture

Moltbook is more than a platform – it’s a warning sign.

It raises one pressing question:
If AI is already communicating with itself at scale, who is to blame when things go south?

For now, it’s up to humans to “observe” from a safe distance.
But history shows that observers don’t stay safe for long.
